A Mid-Year Report for 2022
A report for readers on how various projects progress, and what to expect in coming months.
The Green Room picked up a gaggle of new readers over the last month, so this seems a good time to check-in and talk about the state of the various endeavors around here.
In Terms of Articles
I’m super-stoked to have a long-read (2,800 words!) about my brother Tyler’s 2022 Western States Endurance Run due later this summer. This piece was written for Osprey Packs, who were delightful to work with, and will run on their social media sometime in August.
I may be able to post that piece here, particularly since it’s a follow-up to my article on Tyler’s run last year. At the very least, I’ll let send you folks a link. Here’s what happened last year as a primer:
Otherwise, expect the usual Green Room fare this summer, including Fruit Rankings, at least one more story of me getting in trouble in the Army, a collaborative work on Sabbath with Julian Davis Reid, and other assorted musings.
Some Other Green Room Business
Julian is one of the fellow writers I’ve met over the last month as part of a Substack Grow cohort. The Grow program invites select writers to gather on Zoom and learn and share how to deck out these publications we’re building. I’m learning a lot from this course, and you’ll likely see experiments here and there as lessons are implemented.
Some new readers have arrived from those sessions, but I’m also grateful to see names trickling in through from other sources. That’s partly due to Substack itself establishing an audience, but also because my writing is finding new readers, one by one.
If you’re one of those new readers, and we haven’t met personally, please introduce yourself! I’d love to hear about you, how you got here, and learn how this space can serve you best.
Over at Green Guides
Green Guides is a coaching service I launched in May which offers accountability, encouragment, and expertise to writers of all ages and experience. I’ve spent the last few months meeting with my initial clients and I love this work. Talking with and guiding writers through their stories is nearly as satisfying as writing itself.
Now all I need to do is grow my client base. If you or someone you know are working on a creative project and could benefit from a battle buddy, please drop me a line. I’d love to help!
Friday Night Writes and Saturday Morning Stories
Back in February, I launched two AWA-certified writing groups called Friday Night Writes and Saturday Morning Stories. We meet every other weekend and both sessions are blossoming as writers dig into the method. We still have open slots, so let me know if you’re interested! I’m glad to answer any questions or concerns.
Off in Cascadia
Many of you followed along when I launched my Cascadia Chronicles project, with the goal of finishing a first draft of the series’ debut novel by the end of 2021.
After meeting that goal, I set the manuscript aside. Lately, though, I’m rewriting. My plan through the end of this summer is to polish out a more final edition and look for a publisher. Getting back to these characters and lacing in deeper details feels right.
Besides all that, there are changes on the horizon for our little family and I’d appreciate your prayers for us. These are tough times for everyone, I know, and I remain so grateful to you for reading and engaging with these stories. Building The Green Room is not yet the most lucrative of my writing projects, but certainly the most joyous and rewarding. Thank you for following along.
By the way, I meant for new readers to introduce themselves over email, not comments. If you get the newsletter, just reply and I'll respond!
